I’m playing
a casual round of golf at my home course, Dragon Ridge Country Club. On , the 5th
Hole, a 170 yard par-3, I airmail my tee shot off the back of the green. The
ball trickles on to the cart path and is slowly rolling to a stop. A guy in the
group ahead of us notices the ball, runs from his cart, picks up the ball and
proudly shows it to his playing partners (hell yes, it was a brand new ball!)
On the next
hole, as fate would have it, they wave us to play through. After putting out
for my par, I ask the group; “So, which one of you guys has my brand new
Callaway?” After a few questions and a certain amount of denial on their part,
the dude who picked it up fetched it out of his golf bag. He apologized but
that didn’t change the penalty I incurred for a lost ball.
It has been
suggested by G-Man, my radio co-host, that the Golf Nuts modify the Rules of
Golf. Here is his suggestion:
“How about that crazed
guy in the foursome ahead of us yesterday who picked up your ball? I saw him chasing
it as it rolled on the cart path and he was laughing like a mad man.
He kept shouting, “Look Tony, It has two or three dots on it ".
Strange people play
this strange sport eh my brother?
Fellow golfers should
at least wait for a ball to stop before STEALING it. It's a show of respect
towards the golfer who struck it. "G" Rule 17 A states that a ball
should always be finished with it's initial roll before vigilante duffers pick
it clean from the course and deposit it in their golf bag.”
Forgot one...

We are such crybabies...
Many local golfers and more than a few Golf Nuts were feeling pretty rotten yesterday here in Las Vegas. I guess that I was among the whiners. You see, the temperature dropped from a beautiful 80 degrees to a miserable (by Vegas standards) 50 degrees. The wind was howling and golf just didn't seem like it would be much fun, so I decided to buckle down and get caught up on at least some of my email.
The first email I openned was from Golf Nut Norm Baxter. No note. No subject. Just the following photos... check them out:
So, the next time you feel like the conditions aren't great for golf... refer back to a REAL Golf Nut, Norm Baxter and then grab your sticks and be grateful you can play at all! Way to go Norm... RULING: 1,224 Points!

Scott Masigill ROCKS!

It has been a beautiful day in the desert. Sunshine, warm, blue, cloudless skies made golfing a real treat today. The icing on my "perfect day cake" was playing a round of golf with Scott Masingill, the Golf Nut Society's 2008 Golf Nut of the Year. This guy can flat out play! He shot a "Ho-Hum" 74 at Dragon Ridge Country Club. It is no stretch of the imagination that his score could easily have been 68 or 69 if he had not had to contend with my struggles on the course.
To expect anything less than great from Scott Masingill would be foolhardy. He only knows one way to do everything and that's by giving 100% to whatever he does. It really shows too. More about that later this weekend...in the meantime, check out Scott's impressive resume.
Well, Scott Masingill and his wonderful wife, Laurie (the man married up) arrived at Nut House last night. After a few hours of good stories and lots of laughter and maybe a couple of beers, Scott, Laurie, Mrs. Head Nut (Pam) and I went to Dragon Ridge for dinner. Two bottles of a really nice red wine and a terrific meal later, we trundled off to bed with full stomachs and light hearts. It really does make your face a little sore to laugh that much.
Today, Scott and I will be working hard. We will be playing a practice round on Dragon Ridge...mostly for Scott because I think everything in Payete, Idaho remains frozen until April 15th or so. Afterwards, we will be enjoying the Golf Nut of the Year Cup Pairing Party at Nut House. "Sigh"...it's a tough life but somebody has to do it!
